Importing images, audio and video

Everything you put in a novel, characters, backgrounds, music, sounds and video, comes from files on your device.
Supported formats

Anything else is not offered by the file picker. Convert it first with any converter.
Where images come from
In Settings, Import images from chooses the picker:
- Files / Cloud (default): your device's files, plus any cloud storage apps you have, such as Google Drive or iCloud.
- Photos / Gallery: your photo library.
If your file is in a cloud provider, the app first gets a local copy (Obtaining file), so it can take a moment.
Good file habits
- Keep the originals. Kohana keeps its own copy inside your novel, so your original files are not needed afterwards, but keep them for editing later.
- Name assets clearly. Names are what you see in every list.
- Compress before importing. Big images, WAV audio and long videos make the novel big, which slows sharing, exports and uploads.
- Use transparent PNG or WEBP for characters.
- Use the same image dimensions for all backgrounds.
Only import what you may use
You need the right to use everything you import. That means your own work, or work whose licence allows it. See the Community guidelines for what may be published.
Troubleshooting
- The file isn't offered in the picker. It isn't a supported format.
- The image looks wrong. Check its size, and try re-saving it as PNG.
- The audio doesn't play. Some rare encodings fail. Convert it to MP3.
- Imports are slow. Cloud files are downloaded first. Try copying them to your device.
